15 Times Beyoncé Proved She's Totally Human
Beyoncé Giselle Knowles Carter may be the unquestioned queen of the world as we know it, but that doesn't mean that the mother of all superstars isn't human, too. It may be super hard to grasp, but in between fans blowing her wigs, those gif-worthy, sassy expressions and arguably the best performance skill of this generation, she's actually had a moment or two which let us see that she's actually a normal human! In the past, she's insisted that she likes to laze around on her days off and eat pizza with Jay Z, but there is far more evidence of her humanness to be uncovered. Stay tuned for on-stage falls and mental blanks, ordinary bodily functions that sent the Beyhive into a united breakdown, awkward and painful moments with her famed wind machines, and, uh, a bizarre situation with a giant Christmas tree. Here are 15 times Beyoncé proved she's totally human.
15 Falling At The Super Bowl
Okay, technically she did not fall and crash to the ground like she has done in the past (see below!), but there was a clear moment during the 2016 Super Bowl's Halftime Show where Queen Bey lost her balance, fell back and nearly landed flat on her butt! Even though she is human, she is still Beyoncé so, of course, she was able to catch herself on her feet before any damage was done, get right back up, work it into the routine, without missing a beat. It is also worth noting that she was in the midst of performing crazy choreography for her single Formation, she was in heeled boots and a tight leotard, and she was on a stage being observed by millions of people. But who cares! Regardless of the outcome, Beyoncé lost her balance, which we can all reflect back on the next time we lose ours.
14 Sneezing On The Beat
Yes, this is a thing. During a New York City stop of her Formation World Tour, the superstar had to briefly delay her flawless acapella rendition of Love On Top in order to sneeze. You would have thought that even the most hardcore Beyoncé fans were aware that their idol was capable of sneezing, but apparently not! The stadium went crazy, cheering and shouting “bless you” in unison. It did not stop there: after the infamous sneeze was uploaded online, Twitter was jam-packed full of fans commenting on the situation and sending best wishes. The reactions could just be because Bey prophesized sneezing on the beat in her 2013 hit Partition, but more likely, it is so rare to see her doing normal things that something as simple as a sneeze could unleash mayhem. So it seems like Beyoncé has allergies like everyone else, confirming that she is indeed human.
13 Lip Synching At The Inauguration
Beyoncé is the pillar of the music industry and a vocalist to which all others are compared. We know the girl can kill notes that other artists would not dream of touching, so it was earth-shattering when Bey was discovered lip synching at the 2013 President's Inauguration Day. Being the perfectionist that she is, she had a list of good reasons for her decision which nobody can argue with, including a lack of time to rehearse with the orchestra and complete a sound check, and not wanting to risk jeopardizing such an important day for the nation. To top it off, the singer answered her critics by diving into a live, acapella performance of the Star Spangled Banner at a press conference a few days later. This tells us that Beyoncé's lip-synching wasn't to cover up a lack of talent or ability, but she still did it! She's still human.
12 Losing To T-Swift
It was one of the most talked-about VMA moments of all time. When Kanye West hijacked the VMA stage in 2009 to shame Taylor Swift out of her award for Best Female Music Video, people were too focused on the consequential drama to notice that it was all happening in the first place because Beyoncé's Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It) lost to Taylor's You Belong with Me! Whether you think the win was warranted or not doesn't really matter, because somebody did and Queen Bey lost. Losing is something that we all face every now and then, and it feels pretty good to know that Beyoncé does too! She did go on to win Video of the Year later that night, and shared her winning moment with Tay Tay like the classy lady that she is, but no amount of Yeezy tantrums could help her win Best Female.
11 Marrying Jay Z
Even before they tied the knot in 2008, we all knew there was something going on with Bey and Jay Z (a.k.a. Shawn Corey Carter) when he showed up on her 2003 track Crazy in Love. But it was always hard for fans to see Beyoncé as somebody's girlfriend, and later as somebody's wife, because the two were always so private about their business. So in 2011 when Bey revealed the first-ever public footage of the dress she wore during her wedding to the rapper, the Beyhive lapped it up! It was clear, tangible evidence of Bey's relationship with Jay, and reminded everyone that there's more to her life than stages, photo shoots, and recording studios. A few years later during the power couple's On The Run Tour, more wedding videos were released. The footage showing Bey and Jay munching on wedding cake and stealing a kiss was super human and normal!
10 When Her Family Fought With Her Husband
No normal marriage is without its problems and issues from time to time, and Beyoncé was the first to remind everybody of this after footage was released showing her sister Solange physically attacking and lashing out at husband Jay Z. The surveillance video from May 2014 shows Solange kicking the rapper while her superstar sister stood by in silence, and re-sparked rumors of affairs that have plagued the couple during their entire time together. The cause of Solange's rage and Bey's strange behavior in not defending her husband has never been confirmed, but the singer's 2016 album Lemonade alludes to Jay's infidelity numerous times. Whether the rapper cheated or not, it's clear that something serious went down here, and even Beyoncé is not above relationship issues! In the family's collective press release, the following was said: “At the end of the day families have problems, and we're no different.” Here here!
9 Being A Mom
Does it get any more human than this? Despite revealing her pregnancy to the world on stage in a glittery tuxedo jacket and facing nine months of fake baby rumors accompanying footage that almost looks like a collapsing stomach, Beyoncé became a mom in January 2012 after she gave birth to daughter Blue Ivy Carter. It is possible that the world had never been so excited for the arrival of an infant before Blue came onto the scene, and very few other babies make their music industry debuts before they even leave the hospital (Blue was credited as B.I.C. on Jay's 2012 song Glory, which featured audio of her crying when she was just two days old!). Though the mother-daughter relationship between Bey and Blue may be different from regular ones, there is no denying that bodyguards or no bodyguards, Beyoncé's love for her daughter makes her just like us!
8 Trying And Failing To Trademark Blue's Name
Seeing a superstar like Beyoncé struggle with anything is incredibly liberating. No, we don't think that's a bad thing to say! Just being honest here. When reports surfaced in 2012 that she and Jay had failed to trademark their daughter Blue's name, it was a reminder that the law is the law for everybody. Supposedly, the story goes that the A-lister couple's billion dollar fortune wasn't able to earn them the sole right to the name Blue Ivy because wedding planner Veronica Alexander had already owned a wedding planning business with the name since 2009. Ouch! It was later suggested in the media that the reports weren't entirely true, and Bey and Jay were still in the process of trademarking their baby's name, however, there's been no solid evidence that this was successful. The future may still see Blue Ivy's name trademarked, but for the time being, the whole copyright saga is evidence of Beyoncé's occasional shortcomings.
7 Getting Caught With Unflattering Faces
This is a sad but accepted part of life for most people. But, naturally, Queen Bey is usually flawless in all photos. Because of her bootylicious and impossibly gorgeous features, it is always a huge shock when photos arise in which she doesn't look that good. It's an incredibly simple thing, but the reaction of the world would indicate that fans really do expect Bey to be above taking an ugly shot. Following her killer performance at 2013 Super Bowl Halftime Show, which was so epic that it caused a power shortage, a number of photos popped up online of the singer making funny faces mid-performance. We've all seen her perform and we know how passionate she gets, but the shots are pretty unflattering when frozen in time. Some of them were so unbecoming of the superstar that her publicist actually went to the effort of getting them taken down!
6 Forgetting Lyrics On Stage
Surprisingly, this has happened too many times to pinpoint a single moment. Any browse through YouTube will turn up videos of Beyoncé at numerous points throughout her touring history blatantly forgetting the lyrics to her own songs on stage! Sometimes she mixes and matches with words from other verses, sometimes she giggles to avoid coming under fire, and sometimes she just does crazy vocal runs that are so delicious, they make you seriously care less about what she's actually saying. In less obvious examples, the singer sneakily puts her microphone out to the audience and has them sing the lines back to her to jog her memory. Now, that's a luxury regular humans can't afford, but we sure know what it is to forget important things and crumble a little under pressure. The lesson is that not even Queen Bey is perfect one hundred percent of the time, so chill!
5 Getting Booed With Destiny's Child
Most people wouldn't believe that Beyoncé could get booed. But in Game 4 of the NBA finals in Philadelphia back in 2001, she and Destiny's Child bandmates Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams most definitely did get booed, right off the court. Even though Bey wasn't the icon back then that she is today, she was still the one-name lead singer of one of the hottest upcoming hip-hop groups, so what gives? How dare anybody boo the queen? It turns out that the Sixers were copping quite a thrashing that night, and at halftime, Destiny's Child rocked up dressed in Lakers gear! Though the girls were sporting affiliations to both teams, it was the opposition's colors that drew the merciless Sixers fans into fiery outrage. The ladies were booed right off stage after performing hit Bootylicious. The real message here is you should never aggravate sports fans, even if you're Beyoncé.
4 Losing 'Star Search'
Promo material for Beyoncé's fifth self-titled album shows her as a child standing amongst a cupboard full of trophies she won in singing and dancing competitions. Plus, she's been in the spotlight since the late 90s, so it comes as a bit of a shock that there was ever a time when she went through her own setbacks on the rise to fame. However, smash hit Flawless, from the same album, begins with audio of a young Bey and her singing group Girls Tyme losing to another act on the televised talent show back in 1993! Beyoncé has since commented on her decision to include the material on her album, citing it as a defining moment in her life because she'd never expected to lose and have her dreams crushed. Luckily they weren't too crushed, because three years later Girls Tyme evolved into Destiny's Child, and kick-started Bey's ascent to music royalty.
3 Falling During 'The Beyoncé Experience'
In what was possibly the most embarrassing and painful on-stage fall of all time, Beyoncé proved she was human once and for all when she plummeted down twelve steps on the Orlando stop of her Beyoncé Experience Tour. It was the singer's second headlining tour as a solo act, and perhaps she was still getting used to faring without her bandmates, but at the beginning of her 2006 song Ring The Alarm, poor Bey's heel got caught in her long red coat, and had her tumbling head first down the flight of stairs in front of the whole audience. Unluckily for Bey, YouTube and camera phones were starting to emerge as the norm, and the ordeal was uploaded online immediately! Remember that next time you take a trip on the street. While the fall probably injured the singer, she got straight back up and dived into the song like a queen.
2 Becoming Entangled In A Fan
We knew there was a downside to the fabulous wind machines Beyoncé has to blow her hair on stage! It may not have made major headlines, but the superstar found herself in a bit of an awkward situation during her Mrs Carter Show World Tour back in 2013, when some strands from her long blonde hair were sucked into a stage fan. Bey was then pretty much stuck to the fan until one of her many helpers was able to set her free. Did that stop her singing? Not a chance! She powered through the rest of her 2008 hit Halo like a pro, without so much as a lick out of key. Okay, so fans to blow your hair, an arena of onlookers and a team of bodyguards and personal assistants may not correlate strongly with circumstances in your life right now, but this was just an awkward moment. Beyoncé had an awkward moment!!
1 Knocking Over The Christmas Tree
It may have all been a huge joke for Ashton Kutcher's MTV show Punk'd, but that does not erase the fact that Beyoncé was looking pretty silly back in 2003. In the celebrity-trolling show, Ashton invited Bey to a charity event, and had her believe that she was responsible for knocking over a ginormous Christmas tree and consequently ruining the whole evening! She did not technically knock the tree over as it was all set up, but she was chosen as a pawn in somebody's cruel joke, and she was fooled pretty badly! We can all relate to that, can't we? It's fairly difficult to find the full video of Queen Bey's Christmas saga online, which suggests that perhaps her publicist has been busy again. But in the end, Beyoncé was able to laugh at herself, which is a human trait we'd all do well to have under our belts!
