15 Films We Are Looking Forward To In 2017
We are a few months into 2017, and so far it has been a great year for film! 2017 has already seen the release of Beauty and The Beast and The Lego Batman Movie. All of these films were huge successes, but don't worry, because the best is totally yet to come. There is still two-thirds of the year left, and soon the summer blockbuster season will be upon us. That means that there are still lots of amazing films to look forward to watching this year. 2017 is packed with excellent offerings in the film world, from laugh-until-you-cry comedies to emotional and dramatic thrillers. There is totally something for everyone. And that isn't even including the large selection of superhero franchises and sequels! Are you a film fan who can't get enough of great movies? If so, here are 15 films that we are looking forward to in 2017!
15 Logan Lucky
This epic comedy is Soberbergh's first film since 2013, and we can't wait to see it! The film follows the Logans, who are an unlucky family from the hills of West Virginia. In fact, the family have been known for their bad luck for nearly 100 years. That is a seriously long time! However, everything in this family's life is about to change thanks to the crafty Jimmy Logan (who is played by Channing Tatum). Jimmy decides he is going to change the luck of the family by stealing $14 million from the Charlotte Motor Speedway. We love the A-list cast and the premise. It definitely sounds like it will be goofy, funny, and heartfelt, especially if the pictures from the set are anything to go by. Also, who doesn't want to see more of Channing Tatum?! We definitely do and we know that we aren't the only ones at all!
14 Despicable Me 3
The Despicable Me films were huge box office hits, and 2017 will see the third (and possibly the final) instalment of the animated films. This movie will follow Gru (Steve Carell) and his wife Lucy (Kristen Wiig) as they settle in to happily married life… until they encounter bratty former '80s child star Balthazar Bratt (Trey Parker, writer and producer for South Park). The child star has become obsessed with the character that he played during the '80s, and now Gru and Lucy must stop Bratt from achieving world domination. Gru also faces a little sibling rivalry when he meets his long-lost brother who happens to be more successful than him. Sadly, this is probably the last Despicable Me film as Steve Carell said that Despicable Me 3 might be his final film as Gru. Aww! We are pretty sad to hear that! But we can't wait to see this movie and all its glory!
13 Baywatch
We have all heard of the classic TV show Baywatch, but few of us have actually watched it (mostly because we were too young or not even around yet!). Admittedly, the show may seem a little dated these days, but thankfully Baywatch is getting an update in the form of a new movie. The film follows Kitch Buchannon (played by Dwayne Johnson or The Rock), a straight-up, no-nonsense guy who leads the team of Baywatch lifeguards. Enter Matt Brody (played by Zac Efron), a disgraced former Olympian who does not take anything seriously. The pair may not get along, but they must work together to stop a criminal plot. The comedy film has an A-list cast that is bound to catch your eye, and we will definitely be watching this one… even if it is just to see Zac Efron without his shirt on. Yup, we are not ashamed to admit that!
12 Spiderman 3
You know we had to put at least one in here for all the superhero lovers out there (and trust us, that's a lot of you!) If you like superhero action films, you should set your calendar for July 7th, 2017! The Spiderman films are not necessarily universally beloved. While some people enjoyed Toby McGuire's friendly Spiderman, other people dismissed the films as cheesy. However, superhero films have dominated the market for the last few years, with most of the films having a darker, more adult theme. It is very likely that this Spiderman will go the same way, and it already promises to feature Tony Stark (played by Robert Downey Jr.) as his mentor. The film follows a young Peter Parker after his adventure with the Avengers. The superhero is ready to embrace his identity as Spiderman, but soon an evil villain emerges who threatens to destroy everything that Spiderman cares about. Sounds pretty epic!
11 Annihilation
Annihilation is a sci-fi thriller film that is based on the book of the same name by Jeff VanderMeer. Alex Garland directed this movie, and he has also directed Ex Machina, so we totally know that this film will be another smash hit! The film follows a biologist (played by Natalie Portman) who is working alongside her husband in a quarantined jungle. Some of the team have already died in the jungle, and Portman's character is determined to get to the bottom of the mystery. So far, it seems like this film will be a thriller that keeps viewers on the edge of their seats, so it is perfect for anyone who does not mind some tense viewing! There are lots of reasons to put this film in your diary; it features an all-star cast and the plot is original and gripping. Also, who does not love Natalie Portman?! We do!
10 The Mountain Between Us
The Mountain Between Us is an upcoming romance-disaster film written by Chris Weitz. You will have to wait a bit to see this one since it isn't coming out until October 2017, but it sounds like it will definitely be worth the wait! The film is based on the novel of the same name by Charles Martin, and we can already tell that this film will be a tear jerker. Make sure to pack some tissues if you go see it at the movie theatre! The film stars Kate Winslet and Idris Elba as a surgeon and writer. The pair both end up on a small plane flight together, when the plane crashes in the High Uintas Wilderness. The pair are left with only each other, and both have to deal with harsh weather conditions and injuries. The pair are forced to trust each other and rely on each other for strength, and it is certainly looks like it will be the most heart warming (and heart wrenching!) films of 2017.
9 Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2
Not everyone is fans of the science fiction genre, but this kind of film is definitely much more appealing when there is some comedy as well. Peter Quill and his gang are back for another intergalactic adventure, and this time, the adorable baby Groot is along for the ride. In this movie, the Guardians are trying to work out their new family together, all while helping the Star Lord to learn more about where he really came from. Chris Pratt once said about his character Peter Quill, "He's famous now in the galaxy for having saved so many people… He feels like he's part of this group, a leader of this group. He's a little more responsible and trying to stay out of trouble, but not necessarily doing the best job.” We look forward to seeing what plays out, and we won't have to wait long since this movie will be out in May 2017.
8 The Emoji Movie
It is finally happening: an entire film that is dedicated to emojis. Yes, really! We are not lying! The Emoji Movie is all about Gene, an emoji who just does not fit in. Gene lives inside your smartphone in a hidden world called Textopolis. In Textopolis, everyone has facial expressions. For instance, Gene's best friends are Hi-5 and a code breaking emoji called Jailbreak. Gene, however, is unique as he was born without a filter. This means that he can feel lots of different expressions, which he finds confusing and strange. However, there are other dark events at hand that could endanger every emoji in Textopolis. Gene and his friends set off to find the code that can fix Gene. We think this film will be funny, emotional, and heart warming, which is totally the perfect combination! We will definitely be seeing this with our friends or younger siblings.
7 The Fate Of The Furious
Fast and Furious is one of the rare franchises that just seems to keep getting better. The eighth instalment of the film is in theatres as of mid-April 2017, and everyone is looking forward to seeing what the gang are up to. It seems that life is more relaxing for Dom (played by Vin Diesel) and Letty (played by Michelle Rodriguez), who are on their honeymoon together. Brian and Mia have also settled down; they are retired from the game, and the rest of the team have been exonerated. However, a mysterious woman soon manages to seduce Dom back into the underworld of crime. We are looking forward to the acting, the tense storyline, and of course the cars! Of course, we have to give a shout-out to the late and great Paul Walker, who we miss every single time that we watch one of these movies.
6 Dunkirk
When One Direction broke up, everyone wondered what would happen to each member. Slowly each one has started to forge a new career, and most of their careers as solo artists are not surprising. After all, you have been fans for a while and know that these guys are super talented. But Harry Style's surprising new role as an actor is something we are definitely looking forward to seeing! The gorgeous British singer will be starring in Dunkirk this summer. Dunkirk is an epic war thriller that was written, co-produced, and directed by Christopher Nolan. The film is set during World War II and it follows the Dunkirk evacuation. The serious subject matter is bound to be enthralling and interesting, but we will also be captivated by the cast. Tom Hardy, Harry Styles, and Fionn Whitehead as soldiers. Sounds great to us! We can't wait for its July 2017 release date.
5 The Trap
Did you enjoy the controversial film Spring Breakers? If so, you will be interested to know that the writer/director of that movie, Harmony Korine, is back! This new horror/crime-thriller that stars James Franco, Robert Pattinson, and Al Pacino. The director has implied that this film is the second part of his Florida trilogy, but this time the story is slightly different. The Trap follows an ex convict who is on a quest for revenge against his gangster rapper friend who let him take the fall for a robbery over 10 years earlier. The film was actually supposed to come out in 2016, but it was delayed. The director explained,"I was supposed to shoot it last year. We were two weeks out. I got as close to shooting as you could be, and then I had issues with one of the actors. We had to pause the film, and then the movie got pushed back on the dates. I don't really want to go into specifics, but it was more of a personality thing with one of the actors. So, we put a halt to the film and recast the movie. We're supposed to wait until this May to shoot it." Fingers crossed that it will be out soon!
4 Dark River
The release date of this film is unknown, but you will see it in theatre some time this year. Sean Bean and Ruth Wilson star in the latest thriller mystery from Clio Barnard. Wilson is the star here and plays a woman named Alice who returns to her family's farm after a 15-year absence. She is back to claim the farm that she believes is rightfully hers, but when she arrives, she receives a very hostile welcome from her brother. The film is an adaptation of the successful novel Trespass by Rose Tremain, and we can't wait to see the film! Ruth Wilson seems to be gaining popularity with every passing month. She recently won a Golden Globe for her role on The Affair, and she has also started alongside Idris Elba on the TV drama Luther. We can't wait to see her acting chops in this thriller, and we reckon it will be a film that will leave viewers on the edge of their seats.
3 Star Wars: Episode Eight
We're pretty sure that the majority of people are looking forward to the next epic instalment in the Star Wars series! The tenth instalment in the franchise will drop in theatres in December 2017, and unlike most other film franchises, the series just seems to be getting better and better. Episode Eight is eagerly anticipated (and that's an understatement). After all, it is the sequel to the highest grossing film of all time! This film promises to be more dark and perilous than the last, and we are looking forward to seeing how the director portrays that. It is also an important film for people who are fans of Carrie Fisher (which is basically everyone since it's impossible not to be a massive fan of her!). This was actually her final film role. Rest in peace Carrie Fisher, you truly were a wonderful actress and thankfully your legacy lives on!
2 The Snowman
If Michael Fassbender is starring in a movie, then you can generally assume that the film will be pretty good! Also why would you not go watch a movie that is starring this hunk anyway? We're betting that The Snowman is definitely not going to be an exception. Michael stars in the film as Detective Harry Hole who is investigating the disappearance of a woman after her scarf is found wrapped around a creepy looking snowman. The film promises to be a fantastic crime drama -- Martin Scorsese was originally asked to be the director of the The Snowman, but the role was eventually given to the prestigious Tomas Alfredson. Martin Scorsese stayed on board as the film's executive producer. We also have an interesting fact about the crime film: Michael Fassbender started shooting this movie just two short days after wrapping Assassin's Creed. Now that is a very busy actor!
1 Suspiria
You may not have heard of Suspiria, but it is actually a 1977 horror classic. We are not suggesting you watch the old film though (although it is pretty great) - we are saying that you should definitely watch the 2017 remake starring Tilda Swinton and Chloë Grace Moretz. The creepy film follows the story of a beautiful young ballet dancer who is accepted at a prestigious dance school in Berlin. She happily travels to the dance school to begin studying… but when she arrives, she realizes that something far more sinister is happening at the school. You would not expect it to be normal, right?! The film has supernatural moments, moments that will make you jump and moments that will scare you silly, so it is totally perfect for anyone who loves a good horror flick. Just be warned - you probably will not want to watch this film alone!
