15 Kardashian Projects That Totally Tanked
When it comes to building a successful brand, the Kardashians definitely know what they're doing. Think about it: the famous fam totally dominate pretty much every aspect of the entertainment world and they are only getting more famous by the second. They are responsible for some seriously lucrative and immensely popular business ventures in addition to their string of smash-hit reality shows. The Kardashians seem to have their hand in all kinds of projects, from cosmetics to clothing and everything in between, this family knows how to strike while the iron is hot. However, the Kardashians know firsthand that not every project they lend their name and likeness to will be number one. Yup… contrary to popular belief, not everything they touch turns to gold. The Kardashians might reign supreme right now, but they didn't get to the top without a few bumps along the way. Take a look at these 15 Kardashian projects that totally tanked.
15 The Kardashian Khaos Store In Vegas
Believe it or not, the Kardashians actually had an entire store in Vegas called Kardashian Khaos that was dedicated to selling strictly Kardashian merchandise. The shop was located inside the Mirage Hotel and Casino, but it only lasted three years before closing its doors for good. Unlike their successful chain boutique, Dash, this store only sold overpriced novelty souvenirs such as keychains, mugs, and t-shirts that said things like “Kim Is My Fave." Despite the family's mounting fame and expanding fanbase, the store just didn't pull in the sales they had hoped for. Perhaps they found that there wasn't such a high demand for beach towels with Khloe's face on them after all. One simple internet search will tell you pretty much everything you ever needed to know about 'Kardashian Khaos”… and judging by an online review, it definitely wasn't a fan favorite. The store closed in 2014 and is one of the few Kardashian projects that the famous family would probably like to forget.
14 'Kocktails With Khloe'
Kocktails With Khloe was a unique concept that was one part talk show and one part reality show. It was Khloe's chance to branch out from her family and find her own niche within their brand… but unfortunately, Khloe has yet to find her footing when it comes to hosting. The show was supposedly set in Khloe's own house, where she would sip on mixed drinks and casually chat with her celebrity friends as if they would behind closed doors. Yeah… right. In a recent interview with Howard Stern, Khloe revealed that she initially pitched the idea for the show to the e! Network (home of Keeping Up with the Kardashians and its spin-offs) but they politely declined. Khloe ended up partnering with the FYI network and while the series did generate some media buzz, it couldn't quite take off and was canceled after just 14 episodes. Many have speculated that it was behind the scenes drama that led to the show's early demise, but it was probably poor ratings that were responsible for the show's short shelf life. Kocktails With Khloe was a definite swing and a miss for the Kardashian brand.
13 The Kardashian Kard
When it comes to really bad business ventures, few failed projects can rival the massive flop that was the Kardashian Kard. Yup, the Kardashians released their very own prepaid debit card in 2010 before pulling the plug themselves only a month after its release. If you're wondering why they were so quick to jump ship, Business Insider referred to the Kardashian Kard as “the worst credit card ever." It was a prepaid card, which of course targeted kids and teens that aren't quite ready for the responsibility of a real line of credit. The problem was that the card had ridiculously inflated fees, such as a $100 charge just to activate the card, outrageous monthly fees, and random fees pretty much every time the card came out of your wallet. With all of the card's pointless and inexplicable costs, they were accused of practically robbing their young consumers. After a lawyer sent a letter to the card's issuer that said "Keeping up with the Kardashians is impossible using these cards”, the girls put the kibosh on the project shortly after.
12 Khloe & Lamar's Unbreakable Bond Fragrance
The Kardashians have pretty much done it all… and they've even entered the perfume business. Kim Kardashian has a couple of fragrances on the market that have generated millions in revenue, so it's no surprise that Khloe would be next to release a scent. For a while, the world seemed to be infatuated with Khloe Kardashian and Lamar Odom's relationship. They seemed super happy and in love, and they did just about everything together. They had their own spinoff reality show, and they released their own unisex fragrance. The scent was called Unbreakable Bond and it was marketed to both men and women. The fragrance didn't do as well as they had hoped for in terms of sales, and some stores removed the product from their shelves. While of course, a joint business venture sounded like a great idea at the time, Khloe and Lamar's marriage was crumbling behind the scenes. The couple had been dealing with turmoil for a long time before Khloe filed for divorce in 2013, and their once “Unbreakable Bond” had been shattered.
11 Rob's Arthur George Sock Line
Kris Jenner landed her dream job as a daytime talk show host in 2014, but her dream came to a screeching halt after it was canceled after just a six-week summer run. Due to the popularity of the Kardashians as a whole, it would make total sense to give someone like Kris her own platform. Unfortunately, the show did quite poorly when it came to ratings, despite having high-profile guests like Kanye West, who debut the first pictures of North West on air. Even with her all-star family making regular appearances, nothing could save the show from going belly-up. To add insult to injury, after the show was canceled, a major network exec at Fox verbally slammed Kris in the media, stating, "I think she was pretty uninteresting. That was one where [sister company] 20th Television tried to capitalize on a name. When the camera was on she looked not just like a deer in the headlights, but like a deer that already got hit.” Ouch. We can definitely tell that this is one project that Kris would like to erase from everyone's memory.
9 Khloe's X-Factor Hosting Gig
Khloe thought she scored big when she landed a gig as co-host of X Factor USA alongside Mario Lopez. Khloe would be making her debut on the show's second season, but her lack of experience and training proved to be too much of an obstacle to overcome for live television. Oftentimes, Khloe appeared nervous, uncomfortable, and stumbled to deliver her lines. Her co-host was a seasoned vet at the whole hosting thing, which made Khloe look even worse in comparison. Khloe's short time on X Factor was documented for her own reality show, highlighting moments where she wanted to step down as host all together because she didn't think it was the right fit for her. Her family always cheered her on, but when it came time to announce the lineup for season three, Khloe would not be included on the roster as co-host. The star often made headlines for the rookie mistakes she would make on stage, and it's pretty likely that she wished she had never taken the job in the first place.
8 Kim's Stint On 'DWTS'
Before Kim was quite the mega-celeb she is today, she thought that appearing as a contestant on the popular show Dancing With The Stars would get her some exposure and do wonders for her career. Of course, she signed up for the show under the guidance of her mom and manager, Kris, who often encouraged her kids to take on projects they normally wouldn't be interested in. Kim took to the dance floor back in 2008 for the show's seventh season, and she showed off her moves (or lack thereof) for the whole world to see. Kim failed to impress the judges and the at-home voters, and she was embarrassingly eliminated during the second week of the shows run. To this day, Kim goes down in history as one of the worst stars to ever compete on the show. Following in Kim's footsteps, Rob Kardashian joined the cast of the show a few years later and did remarkably well. There's no doubt that Kim's time on DWTS totally tanked… big time.
7 Khloe's Radio Career
Who remembers Khloe's short stint as a radio DJ in Florida? Khloe made her debut as host of the late-night show “Khloe After Dark” during the first season of Kourtney & Khloe Take Miami. On the show, Khloe ruffled some feathers at the radio station for some unprofessional behavior, but overall, she was pretty good at her job. The on-air gig didn't seem to last too long, though, and “Khloe After Dark” was pulled from the lineup. Perhaps Khloe left the position on her own once she left Miami, but that didn't stop her from trying her hand at DJ'ing again… and again. For a while, she did guest gigs at a local LA radio station and years later had her own show in Dallas for a very brief period when her then-husband Lamar was playing for the Dallas Mavericks. It seems like though she had the right personality to host a radio show, she just couldn't dedicate enough time to making it work due to her crazy schedule. Whatever the case may be, Khloe's career as a disc jockey lasted about as long as Kim's marriage to Kris Humphries.
6 Kendall & Kylie's Sci-Fi Novel
Kendall and Kylie Jenner are the youngest members of the Kardashian/Jenner brood, but they already have a bunch of successful business ventures under their belts. Kendall is a top supermodel while Kylie has hit the jackpot with her popular lip kits. That said, the sisters majorly flopped when they released their own fictional novel in 2014. We already know what you're thinking - Kendall and Kylie… as writers? While we would love to think that the Jenner's could be responsible for some greatest literary workings of our time, we know that's just not the case. The book was called Rebels: City Of Indra: The Story Of Lex And Livia, and nobody believed for even a split second that they wrote any of it. It was revealed that the book sold a disappointing 13,000 copies since its debut, which is basically nothing compared to other celebrity novels. In addition to low sales, the book also received poor reviews from the select few who did read it. Kendall and Kylie can do a lot of things… but writing best-selling sci-fi novels definitely isn't one of them.
5 Khloe On 'Celebrity Apprentice'
Everyone knows that momager and matriarch of the Kardashian clan, Kris Jenner, loves when an opportunity comes knocking on her door. There are few projects that Kris will turn down because she wants her children to become even bigger superstars than they already are. That's exactly what happened back in 2009 when Khloe Kardashian was urged to sign up as a contestant on The Celebrity Apprentice. Earlier this year, Khloe revealed that she totally hated her time on the show and only did it because "my mom made me do it”. Anyone who remembers Khloe's brief stint on the show will recall that she wasn't the outspoken, fun-loving, and sassy person that we know and love from watching Keeping Up with the Kardashians. Khloe presented a lackluster performance on the show and it was clear to see that she was completely out of her element. Khloe made it until episode six before she heard the words “you're fired” uttered from Donald Trump in her direction. While the goal of having Khloe on the show was to gain exposure and help build the Kardashian empire, it only appeared to have made Khloe miserable and didn't do much for her career in the long run.
4 Kim's Music Career
When it comes to taking risks, sometimes you strike gold… and other times, you just plain strike out. Unfortunately for Kim Kardashian, she had to learn the hard way that a career as a singer just wasn't in the cards for her. It's no surprise that Kim isn't a world-renowned vocalist, but it was a shock when she thought that stepping into the music studio would be a good idea. The reality star had the opportunity to make music with the help of rapper and producer, The Dream, and “Jam (Turn It Up)” was born. The upbeat track featured Kim's auto-tuned attempt at singing and her only song had a mere 14,000 downloads in its first week. Needless to say, “Jam” was the first and last time Kim ever released a single. To this day, Kim remains firm in the fact that her brief moment as a singer is still one of the biggest regrets of her career. There's no doubt that this was one failed project that all of us saw coming.
3 Khroma Beauty
There's lots of drama surrounding the Kardashian's line of beauty products, so bear with us. Kourtney, Kim, and Khloe all signed on to launch a makeup line called Khroma Beauty. The cosmetics brand featured everything from mascara to fall lashes, and the girls signed a five-year deal to collaborate with Boldface Licensing and Branding back in 2012. Well, apparently the name was already a registered trademark that belonged to someone else, so of course, the company was smacked with a hefty lawsuit for infringement. The makeup line then was rebranded as Kardashian Beauty after the initial company went under. This is where even more legal stuff comes into play. The girls cited that the new company responsible for Kardashian Beauty breached their contract by using their names and likeness and they claimed to have not received any royalties from sales of the products. The company then fired back by saddling the sisters with a lawsuit of their own to the tune of $10 million for failing to promote the brand. In 2014, the Kardashians eventually settled out of court, but its super clear to see why they want to distance themselves from this blunder of a project.
2 Smooch Boutique
This was a children's clothing store that was started by Kris Jenner and Kourtney Kardashian. Longtime fans of Keeping Up with the Kardashians probably remember seeing scenes of the show shot in the store and it was mentioned relatively frequently during the early years of the Kardashian's quest for fame. The store opened in 2003 and lasted for six years before Kourtney decided that it was time to close up shop in 2009. Right before the store closed for good, Kourt posted a blog on her website that offered some insight into why they were giving up on the business. The star basically said that she used to be obsessed with running the store and would spend countless hours to it, but she doesn't have the proper time for it anymore and it wouldn't be the same without her or her mother there to run it. It sounded like the Kardashians simply outgrew their early business and traded it in for bigger things (like becoming mega celebrities), but many have said that the store offered super pricey high-end items and poor sales were probably to blame. Either way, this was one business that just couldn't quite make the cut.
1 'I Am Cait'
Caitlyn Jenner starred in the reality series I Am Cait for two short seasons before it was announced that it would not be renewed. Compared to the impressive success of Keeping Up with the Kardashians, which has been on the air for over a decade and counting, Caitlyn's show totally tanked. The most recent season premiere of I Am Cait received 750,000 viewers, while KUWTK raked in over two million viewers. It has been said that the reason behind Caitlyn's cancellation was that viewers lost interest because they simply did not find her relatable. She had pretty controversial views when it came to politics and often clashed with her transgender friends about which political party she supported, despite their stance on trans issues. Regardless of the reasoning, I Am Cait was for sure a rare Kardashian project that failed to flourish. Clearly when you have something as good as KUWTK why try for anything else. Give the people hat they want!
